Basic Triads (Maj/Min)

The Building Blocks

1The Theory

Triads are 3-note chords built by stacking thirds—skipping every other note in the scale. They are the core building blocks of harmony.

In every major key, the 1, 4, and 5 chords are naturally Major. The 2, 3, and 6 chords are naturally Minor. This pattern is consistent across all keys.

When playing worship piano, your right hand typically plays the triad (1-3-5 fingering) while your left hand plays a power-fifth shape (root and 5th) to provide weight.

Almost every modern worship song is built on just four chords: the 1, 5, 6, and 4. Master these shapes, and you can play thousands of songs.
