The Major Scale

Foundation of everything

1The Theory

The major scale is the foundation of modern music. It’s a 7-note sequence built on a specific pattern of whole (W) and half (H) steps: W-W-H-W-W-W-H.

On the piano, the major scale defines the Nashville Number System. Every chord and melody note we play comes from the degrees of this scale.

A key skill for pianists is fingering. The standard rule for a one-octave scale is "thumb under, middle over"β€”this allows you to play 7 notes seamlessly with 5 fingers.

Each degree has its own "feel": 1 is home, 4 provides a lift, 5 provides power, and 7 creates tension that wants to resolve back to 1.

Why this matters for worship

"Major keys (G, C, D, A) cover the majority of worship songs. Knowing this scale is knowing the language of the songs you play."
