Worship Chords (Sus & 7ths)

Modern Colour

1The Theory

Modern worship piano rarely uses plain triads. We add "colour" using Sus and 7th chords to create a more open, atmospheric sound.

"Sus" chords replace the 3rd with a 2nd (Sus2) or a 4th (Sus4). "7th" chords add a 4th note to the triad for added depth.

Sus2 chords (1-2-5 fingering) are especially common in worship because they sound ambiguous and beautiful. They create a tension that feels "open" rather than "unresolved".

When a chord chart says "C", playing a Csus2 instead immediately makes it sound like a modern worship recording.
